Coimbatore: Tamil Nadu on Thursday reported 5,560 fresh cases of COVID-19 and 59 related deaths, taking the total number of infections to 5,25,420 and the state toll to 8,618, said the State Health Department media bulletin.

Of the new cases reported today, 992 were from State Capital Chennai.
As of September 17, cumulatively 5,25,420 COVID-19 positive cases have been confirmed in the state, which includes 8,618 deaths and 4,70,192 discharges, the Health Department said in its bulletin.
Among the districts where a higher number of cases were reported, Coimbatore accounted for 530, Chengalpattu 283, Thiruvallur 239, Salem 291 and Cuddalore 206.
Tirupur logged 115 cases and the Nilgiris 82.
According to the bulletin, the number of active cases stood at 46,610.
A total of 60,23,627 samples have been tested till date of which 82,683 were tested over the last 24 hours.
