Coimbatore: Talks that were held between the farmers and the authorities regarding releasing water from the Aliyar Dam new ayacut canals from October 7 were successful and the negotiations reached a conclusion causing the farmers to be glad.

The Aliyar dam that is situated on the foothills of the Western Ghats near Pollachi irrigates nearly 50,00 acres of land through the old and new ayacut canals with 22,300 acres of agricultural lands irrigated through the water released from the new ayacut canals.

The water is customarily released for irrigation through the new ayacut canals each year in October.

The talks regarding the release of water for this year were held at the office of the PAP Project Supervising Engineer in Pollachi, between the officials and the farmers and lasted for more than three hours.

It was decided that up to 2,560 million cubic feet of water will be released through the new ayacuts to the Pollachi Sethumadai, Feeder and Vettaikaranpudur canals. This has caused the new ayacut farmers to rejoice.

With the water set to be released on the 7th, farmers have requested the PWD to clear the plants and thorny bushes in the water pathways.
