Coimbatore: A man was arrested for manufacturing and selling 'svuttukkai' in Periyanaickenpalayam Forest Range.
The Coimbatore Forest Zone has seven wildlife ranges namely Madukkarai, Coimbatore, Periyanaickenpalayam, Mettupalayam, Sirumugai, Boluvampatti and Karamadai. In the rural areas and patta lands adjoining these ranges, people are using explosives to keep elephants from entering.
In order to prevent it, two weeks ago, a special team led by Assistant Forest Guard Dinesh conducted a search operation at the Periyanaickenpalayam Forest Range border and another team led by Senthilkumar inspected at the Boluvampatti and Madukkarai Forest Ranges.

Upon informationthat a person named Murthy was making and selling 'avuttukkai' in Siliyur next to Karamadai, Narasimhanaickenpalayam forest ranger Ramakrishnan and forest ranger Kalyanasundaram went on enquiry disguised as comman men. The culprit was interrogated and arrested at Seeliyur bus stand. Following this, they went to the culprit's house and seized hunting equipment like ammunition, knives, rope and handed over the first information report to the Karamadai police.
As investigations have intensified, forest activists have demanded that inspections must be carried out in areas adjacent to forests.
