Private bus owners in Coimbatore have requested road tax exemption for the second quarter as they have not operated the for the past five months. not been in operation for the past five months.
Speaking about this, Coimbatore Private Bus Owners Association President Duraikannan said, "There are 334 private buses operated in Coimbatore district, 155 in the urban areas, 89 in Mettupalayam and 90 in Pollachi. From September 15, 50 % buses are being operated all over the district.
The number of passengers using the buses has also been increasing substantially and there is a shortage of conductors and drivers. Many private bus drivers have already shifted their jobs and drive lorries and cars.
Many conductors have become employees of private companies and shops. Many of them have not returned to their previous jobs. This might be due to the fear that the operation of buses might be stopped again due to the spread of COVID-19. This has caused anacute shortage of bus drivers and conductors.
The road tax for the second quarter from July to September will be levied this month. With private buses not in operation for the past five months, we must be exempted. If that is done, we can operate more buses from October."
