Five houses built under Greenhouses Scheme for tribals near Coimbatore inaugurated

Coimbatore: Five houses built under Green Houses Scheme for tribals near Coimbatore were inaugurated today.

Coimbatore: There are about 25 families living in the hill village Kandivali near Anaikatti, Coimbatore.

As most of the houses were damaged during the summer rains last year, the residents were made to stay in a nearby government school. When the District Collector visited the rain-protected areas and listened to the grievances of the people, they requested for the construction of greenhouses.

Following this, an order was issued to build 13 houses and funds were allocated for five houses at the rate of two lakh ten thousand rupees from the government. The 320-square-foot building incurred a cost of four lakh rupees. Due to lack of funds, social activist Joshua raised funds from private contributions and completed the project.

A housewarming ceremony was conducted today and the houses were given to the tribal families. As the central government has increased the funds allocated for the construction of green houses from two lakhs ten thousand to three lakhs, the tribals said that this would enable them to build houses without financial assistance from others. At present, the construction of five houses is complete and that of remaining houses is about to start.

As five families have a joint patta, efforts are being made to divide it and build green houses for all with individual patta. It is to be noted that the houses were built by the tribals themselves and tribal villagers from 18 other hamlets have also requested greenhouses in their regions.
