Coimbatore: Community home gardens are set up to provide nutritious food to children, adolescent girls and pregnant women as part of the Nutrition month.

The country is observing September as Nutrition Month. As part of this, community home gardens are being set up at homes with Anganwadi children, pregnant women, adolescent girls and also in panchayats.

The District Officer of the Integrated Child Development Services Scheme Meenatchi said, "Setting up community gardens at homes will provide nutritious vegetables to children, pregnant women, adolescent girls and feeding mothers.

Particularly, the micronutrients are made available fully. Home gardens not only provide healthy vegetables, they also help increase physical activity. As a result of this, mental stress is reduced. Future generations can be taught our traditional habits with the help of home gardens.

Since greens provide iron, action is being taken to mountainous varieties at homes of all the beneficiaries."
