Coimbatore: A 75- year- old woman was killed in a lone wild elephant attack near Pannimadai in the outskirts of Coimbatore.

More than 100 wild elephants live around Anaikatti, Mangarai, Thadagam and Pannimadai areas. It is common for them to stray into residential areas frequently in search of food and water. At the time a lone wild elephant was roaming in the area in the wee hours today, Leelavathi, a 75-year-old woman from the locality, was on her way to a nearby temple at 4 am.

The lone elephant attacked the old woman causing her to die on the spot. Personnel from Forest and Police departments rushed to the spot and sent the body to Coimbatore government hospital for an autopsy.

The public in the area said that elephant movement has increased in the area. The relatives of the deceased refused to receive the body and indulged in a protest in Thadagam road demanding an end for the elephant menace that causes public nuisance and even deaths. Forest and police department officials are negotiating with the public.
