Coimbatore: Three female councillors protested at the Makkinampatti panchayat council office condemning the interference of outsiders in panchayat affairs.

In the Makkinampatti panchayat under the Pollachi South Union Territory, three women councilors including two DMK councilors, took part in a dharna protest today demanding outsiders stop interfering.

Councillors Eswari (48), Sofia (40) and Vijayalakshmi (35) said, "At Makkinampatti panchayat in Pollachi South Union, women representatives have been elected as panchayat members in wards 3, 4 and 5.

For the last 5 months, the panchayat administration has not informed the ward members about any activities in these 3 wards including basic facilities like drinking water, street lights and garbage disposal."

They added "Only elected representatives should be involved in panchayat work in their wards. The interference of other persons in panchayat affairs should be altogether stopped.Based on the advice of the Regional Development Officer, we appealed for a resolution of this at panchayat meetings to no avail.this.

In addition, facilities such as sewerage, garbage disposal, drinking water supply and street lights have not been properly provided at Indira Nagar and Karupparayan Nagar 5th Street areas for the last 8 months.We are engaged in a sit-in struggle at the panchayat office demanding the interference from outsiders in panchayat affairs be stopped."



Following talks with officials from the regional development and police, who assured of action, the councillors stopped protesting and dispersed.
