Coimbatore: The Coimbatore Cancer Foundation (CCF) today announced the launch of the 8th edition of the Coimbatore Marathon. The event, to be held from 1st December to 31st December 2020, promises to be bigger than ever. This year, given the prevailing pandemic situation, it is unlikely that the event can be conducted in the usual format. However, the organising team has planned an exciting and safe alternative for the participants. The 2020 edition of the Coimbatore Marathon will be a Virtual Event. The theme for this year is ‘RUN SMART’.

The past editions of the event have always been held in the first week of October, but taking into consideration of the factors such as adverse weather conditions prevailing during that time of the year and the clash with festival and public holidays, the event will henceforth be permanently moved to December from this year onwards.

The premier running event is expected to attract more than 25,000 participants from all walks of life across the world. Registration for Coimbatore Marathon 2020 Virtual Event is now open, and participants can register through www.coimbatoremarathon.com.

Ramesh Ponnuswami, Race Director, Coimbatore Marathon, said, “We are very excited to present this virtual edition of the marathon and ensure continuity of the event for the benefit of all stakeholders. Since the event is a virtual one, we are not constrained to conduct it on a specific date and time. Participants can choose their date, start time, route, distance and run from wherever they are and complete their race any time during the month of December. Another advantage of the virtual run is that we are not constrained in terms of the route, timings and so on, so we have introduced 4 new event categories – a 3 km run/walk, a 10 Miler [16.1 km], a 20 Miler [32.2 km] and a Full Marathon [42.2 km] in addition to the usual 5 km run/walk, 10 km and Half Marathon (21.1 km) events.”

For those wishing to participate in this edition of the marathon, a donation of Rs. 99 to the Coimbatore Cancer Foundation will be applicable for participants based in India & US$5 for participants based outside India, for all the categories. Participants in India can opt for a Finisher Medal for a donation of Rs. 399/- (US$24 for participants outside India) or a Finisher Medal & a Finisher T-shirt for a donation of Rs. 699/- (only available for India based participants). Participants must submit their timing online for verification. Post verification, Finisher Medal & Finisher T-shirt will be home delivered to participants who opted for them. All participants get to download an E-certificate & E-badge for participating & contributing to a noble cause”.

Dr. T. Balaji, Managing Trustee of the Coimbatore Cancer Foundation said, “As the society gets on its feet after a series of lockdowns and looks to connect people safely, here we are with the virtual edition of the Coimbatore Marathon. The pandemic has left cancer patients at greater risk and that calls for awareness initiatives bigger than before. Coimbatore Marathon, this year, strives to attract runners from across the globe and continue to support our Foundation. Over the years, the overwhelming response to the on-ground editions of the marathon has created greater visibility for our fight against cancer and has touched the lives of many. Apart from raising funds for screening camps and other awareness activities, the event has built a community of runners and people from all walks of life who raise awareness on cancer in Coimbatore and surrounds."

He added, "This year we hope to see the community becoming bigger and better, enabling us to provide cancer care, financial support and counselling to more patients and their family members. With the additional goodwill and resources at our disposal we now intend to expand our scope of services and work more in the palliative sphere and improve the quality of life of those with chronic suffering. We continue to offer supporting organisations viable and useful CSR opportunities like "ARAVANAIPPU", our rural home-based palliative care project that CCF can partner and implement in their operation. This year will be a new experience for all of us and we are as excited as the runners. We thank the people from Coimbatore and different parts of the world for their love and support and we look forward to seeing a great turnout this year.”

The funds raised from this marathon supports many activities of CCF like – Surgery, Chemotherapy, Radiotherapy, Investigations, Bed charges, Rehabilitation & Various Projects.
