Of the total 409, 197 pregnant women who were tested for the virus and admitted at ESI hospital had comorbidities like gestational diabetes, blood pressure and respiratory ailments, said the release issued by A. Nirmala, Dean of Government Medical College Hospital and ESI hospital, Coimbatore.
She noted in the release that months after the hospital was declared to be a nodal treatment centre for novel coronavirus disease on March 23, the cases have been increased, everyday. ESI hospital handles COVID-19 cases from three districts, Tiruppur, Coimbatore and the Nilgiris.
“A majority of such pregnant women had to undergo C-Sec due to co-morbidities and risk factor. While 7 of them had vaginal delivery. Out of the 76 Covid positive pregnant women, who were treated at private hospitals and later shifted to ESI, 70 of the them have been discharged. While 7 are being treated for Severe Acute Respiratory Infections (SARI)", the release said.
According to the release, four newborns contracted the infection from their mothers. However, all four babies and the mothers were treated and discharged. After birth, the newborn babies shall be tested only after three to four days of observation.
According to WHO, close contact and early, exclusive breastfeeding helps a baby to combat/survive the infection . A woman with COVID 19 should be supported to breastfeed safely, hold her newborn skin to skin and share a seperate room with her baby.
