Chennai Press Club condoles demise of Senior journalist Sudhangan

Sudhangan (63), a notable senior journalist from Tamil Nadu and a senior member of the Chennai Press Club, passed away today, due to lung-related illness.


Sudhangan (63), a notable senior journalist from Tamil Nadu and a senior member of the Chennai Press Club, passed away today, due to lung-related illness.

In a press release issued by the Chennai Press Club on his demise, they recalled

Sudhangan's journey and how he stood apart as a journalist, independent columnist, political analyst and a writer. He is the only South Indian Journalist to win "The Statesman" award for rural reporting in Calcutta.

He started his career in the year 1978 in a Tamil weekly "Thisaigal" (Directions). And, also contributed as a freelancer in the popular Tamil Weekly "Kumudham".

He later joined Vikatan in 1982, where he worked for ten years. Then, in 1986, he received the Statesman Magazine Award for Rural Reporting.

His exemplary reports proving the existence of bonded labour was well recognised. His reports with proof helped to rescue bonded labourers from Tamil Nadu from Andhra Pradesh.

When MGR was the Chief Minister, it was Sudhangan who pointed the discrepancies in implementing welfare schemes in his own constituency of Andipatti. He presented facts with video proof, following which the issue was resolved.

In 1992, he resigned from Junior Vikatan and joined Dinamani, a daily newspaper as, editor-in-chief. As the management split into two groups, he started the Tamil Express magazine for the Indian Express Mumbai and became its founding editor.

A renowned political analyst, Sudhangan has interviewed several political figures in Vijay, Raj and Jaya TV. At present, he is columnist for Tamil daily "Dinamalar" Nellai Edition.

Author of more than forty short stories, Sudhangan will be deeply missed, said the orbituary release from the Chennai Press Club.
