All over the world the demand for handcrafted items is high. Artists are particularly keen to make use of things that end up as waste. Art on egg shells and carving pencil leads are some of the crafts.

Swetha, a college student in Tirupur has been crafting used coconut shells into artistic craftswork. The girl who is a first year Fashion Designing student at NIFT, began crafting coconut shells as a hobby during the lockdown. When she became adept at it, she turned it into a money making venture.

Swetha has filled her house with crafts out of coconut shells such as vinayagar idols, flower plants, a giant ant, ducks, autos and 100s of such artistic items. The shape and the coating on the items will make one forget that they are made of coconut shells.

She has also crafted on bottles. She sells her artistic items to known people and receives the full support and encouragement of her parents.

She said, "I have begun to learn how to craft things realistically and am currently working on small items. In the future, I would like to teach this craft to others and my ambition is to set up a shop for this."
