Coimbatore: The public protested refusal by some real estate agents to bury dead people in a burial ground near Thudiyalur in Coimbatore as part of the area has become residential plots. The body of the deceased was placed in an ambulance and a road roko was staged.
A poramboke land of nearly 50 cents that lies on the right side of the Kaliammal Colony on the road from Thudiyalur to Kanuvai has a burial ground. This has been the burial ground for people from the scheduled community classes living in the Thudiyalur Anna Colony and Muthu Nagar areas for the past 60 years. The deceased from these areas are either burned or buried in the grounds.
A group of real estate promoters have purchased nearly five acres land near the burial ground and have marked the sites for sale. They have also raised a compound wall around the land and are constructing an entrance. The public then placed a complaint that an entrance was being constructed on one side of the burial ground. Following this, talks were held in March led by the North Tahsildar.
Meanwhile a 75 year old man from the Anna Colony area in Thudiyalur died two days ago. Plans were made to bury the body in front of the compound, by the relatives of the deceased. Opposing this, the real estate owners said that since residences were going to come up in the location, the body must be buried in some other place.

The relatives of the dead person refused this and an argument ensued.
The police who received information regarding this arrived and negotiated. They informed the real estate persons that the land has been used as a burial ground for many years and so they could not stop them from burying the dead person following which the deceased was buried there.
Following this, another person, Palaniammal (73) of the Anna Nagar area died due to illness yesterday morning. Residents of the area staged a road roko along with the body of the deceased in the ambulance near the Thudiyalur bus stop. They alleged that the real estate people were preventing them from burying the body again.
The police who met the protestors assured them that they would provide them with proper protection following which the protests were given up. Following this, the burial took place with police protection.
The incident caused a stir in the Mettupalayam-Thudiyalur road.
