Find and demolish dilapidated buildings in Coimbatore - District Collector and Corporation Commissioner issue orders
Coimbatore:
A three-storey residential building collapsed due to heavy rains at KC Thottam near Chetti Veedhi in Coimbatore. This gruesome incident resulted in three deaths and grievous injuries to four persons. The incident occurred around 9 pm on Sunday on Chetti Veedhi near Selvapuram in Coimbatore. The building, which was allegedly constructed around 25 years ago, caved in, taking the adjacent building down with it.
Following this tragedy, the Corporation Commissioner issued a directive earlier today to the Town Planning Office of the Corporation to find old and unstable buildings in the City and have them either demolished or renovated.
Under the circumstances, Coimbatore District Collector has issued an order stating that the buildings that are in a state of disrepair and disuse for a long time and pose threats to the lives of people should be demolished.
The order that was released to the press reads, "It has been insisted for quite some time now that old, unstable private and government buildings that are in a state of disrepair and disuse for a long time endangering the lives of people be demolished. Quite many buildings pose danger to the public. Some of them have caved in and have claimed a few lives. Under these circumstances, owners of such buildings in Coimbatore are requested to swing into action immediately and demolish them. Action will be initiated against those who do not comply
The officials of Revenue, PWD and Municipal Administration Departments are directed to find such dilapidated buildings and do the needful immediately.
With the imminent Northeast monsoons, it is imperative that officials in the relevant departments take swift action in a concerted manner.
