Coimbatore: Illavarasan, the man who set up the banner calling the Corporation isolation as “belittling” has been booked for defaming the Corporation, endangering the public, spreading disease among people and for venturing out from a containment zone without prior permission from the Corporation. An FIR has been filed against him.
Illavarasan is a resident of Perumal Kovil Street at Ramanuja Nagar of the East Zone of Coimbatore Corporation. His wife was diagnosed with COVID-19 on August 17 and was admitted to CODISSIA. She was discharged and returned home on August 24. Due to lack of cooperation from the family members, COVID testing was not undertaken for them. Hence the house was announced as an isolation zone and the people in the house were restricted from going out for 14 days. Further, they were also advised to contact the medical officer or the health inspector if they develop of COVID symptoms.
Despite the knowledge that his wife had COVID-19, Illavarasan secretly brought his father home from Vedapatti on August 18 whose health failed five days after which prompted his admission to the ESI hospital on August 22. However, the treatment did not help, and he passed away on August 25. Following his death, a COVID screening camp was organised in the area on August 27 and people were subjected to PCR tests.
The test results that came out on September 1 were positive for Ilavarasan’s wife Roja, daughters Vidya and Sruthi and his mother Vairambal. Corporation officials advised them to get admitted into a hospital or COVID care centre. However, they refused and isolated themselves at home.
Meanwhile, the family visited a private laboratory on September 4 and underwent COVID tests. When they received reports stating that they tested negative for COVID-19, Ilavarasan placed a banner in front of his house mocking the Corporation. The controversial banner that read "Congratulations to Coimbatore Corporation for belittling us as COVID positives when we were in fact negative" created quite a stir.
This being the case, it is said that the family had allegedly been very uncooperative with the Corporation and health department officials and now has placed a banner with the intention of disgracing the Corporation.
Based on a complaint filed, an FIR has been filed against Ilavarasan under various sections of IPC for endangering the public, spreading disease among the people and for venturing out from a containment zone without prior permission from the Corporation.
A Corporation release said that the family had allegedly behaved with the intent of slandering the Government and Coimbatore Corporation, they did not cooperate with the officials and have been spreading false news. The public has been requested to not believe in such false propaganda.
