There are more than 500 residents at the Orattukuppai village near Chettipalayam at the outskirts of Coimbatore. A factory to treat medical biowaste is to be set up by the company, Coimbatore Bio-Waste Management Private Limited, one kilometer away from the residential area.

However, the residents of the area have filed a petition with the Coimbatore District Collector to not permit the operations of this biomedical waste treatment factory alleging that it can pollute the air and underground water and also cause asthma, breathing difficulties and a host of other diseases.

Speaking about this the residents of the area said, "We have been using underground water for drinking purposes and if it gets polluted, then the area will become unlivable. Hence the operations of the new factory must not be permitted."

Meanwhile, the factory managementhad contacted the people in the area and informed them that the treatment of biomedical waste will not cause any harm and they had imported machinery worth crores of rupees and are ready to provide any help that the people of the locality might need.
