Trains from Coimbatore to Chennai and Mayiladuthurai resume services today - Low passenger turnout due COVID threat

Coimbatore: Train services between Coimbatore and the cities of Chennai and Mayiladuthurai resumed today after a long gap due to the COVID-19 lockdown. A low passenger turnout was witnessed due to COVID threat.

The COVID lockdown saw a complete freeze on train services except the ones that were run to ferry migrant workers to their home states such as Bihar and Uttar Pradesh Special trains were operated briefly Coimbatore to Chennai and Mayiladuthurai but were banned again as there was an increase in COVID cases.



Presently, the lockdown has been relaxed and public transport within the state has been allowed to resume with guidelines. Under the circumstances, the Southern Railway has announced resumption of train service from Coimbatore to Chennai and Mayiladuthurai. Bookings for the service started a few days ago at the Coimbatore Railway Station.



Trains to Chennai and Mayiladuthurai departed at 6:15 am and 7:15 am, respectively. Due to the threat of COVID-19, only a few passengers turned out to travel. The Chennai train had 374 passengers. Earlier, they asked to arrive at the station 90 minutes earlier, were given sanitizers and thermal scanned.



They were then queued up with social distancing and allowed to enter the platform after their tickets were checked and belongings scanned.
