Coimbatore: Plans have been made to deploy labourers under the MGNREGA to plant tamarind saplings on the roadsides in the ruralareas, informed the officials of the Rural Development Department.
Under the Central Government's MGNREGA scheme, the planting of saplings in the rural areas is being undertaken. To facilitate this, nurseries have been set up at all Union offices and saplings are being produced.
Each year one lakh saplings are planted under the scheme for planting saplings in public places and on rural roadsides. Meanwhile plans have been made to plant two lakh saplings in Coimbatore in the current year.

Speaking regarding this, a Rural development department official said, "Under the MGNREGA plans are made to plant upto two lakh saplings each year. Saplings are being grown at the nurseries at Kemmarampalayam and Chikkarampalayam.

More than 20 varieties of saplings including Indian Beech, tamarind, neem, Indian tulip, golden shower, Java plum and mahogany are being raised for this purpose. Similarly, plans have been made to plant tamarind trees on either side of the roads in the rural areas. By doing so, revenue for the Panchayats will be ensured in the future.
Even though the planting of saplings has commenced, more number of saplings will be planted once the North west monsoon rains begin."
