Coimbatore: Based on a tip off received by the Forest department raids were conducted at the Periyanaickenpalayam Forest Range border and the Madukkarai Forest Range border. A host of weapons and bombs were retrieved and four people have been arrested in connection with this.

The Forest Department received a tip off that some homeowners and farm owners outside the Coimbatore Forest Range have made country explosives using 'avuttu kaai', to chase away wild elephants and other wild animals that stray into their areas.

The Forest department workers were divided into team teams led by Assistant guards Dinesh and Senthilkumar at the Periyanaickenpalayam Range border and the Madukkarai Range border, respectively where they conducted a search.

Additionally, sniffer dogs from the Anamalai and Sathyamangalam Tiger Reserves were brought and they were involved in the search.

Country explosives, meat bombs, deer horns, airguns, net explosive materials, spears and knives were retrieved from five villages in Periyanaickenpalayam, one village in Boluvampatti and two villages in Madukkarai. Four people were arrested during the search and have been placed under judicial custody.

Further, awareness campaigns promoting the prevention of such country explosives were also conducted by the Forest Department officials in these villages.
