Coimbatore: The 149th birth anniversary of towering freedom fighter V.O. Chidambaram Pillai was celebrated on Saturday, here at the Coimbatore Central Prison.
As a part of it, celebrations were organised at Coimbatore central prison where the leader was imprisioned during the British era.
V.O.Chidambaram Pillai, who had undergone imprisonment during India's freedom struggle was yoked to the oil press and forced to pull it by the British at the Coimbatore central prison. This place was later converted into a memorial hall in memory of the great leader who had sacrificed his life for the nation's freedom.
Fondly known as ‘Kappalottiya Tamizhan", he brought laurels to the nation by forming the Swadeshi Steam Navigation Company (SSNC), and launched Swadeshi ships and from Tuticorin. Chidambaram Pillai spent his last days at Coimbatore central prisonas a political prisoner, however he was made to undergone severe torture.
Members of public, political parties, prison officials visited his statue and the oil press at the Coimbatore central prison and paid floral tributes.
