COVID-19 infections are on the up in Coimbatore. As a result of this, the public have been scared to travel by buses and rather prefer two wheelers.

On September 1, 2020, 800 government buses were operated in the Coimbatore Division. Due to the lukewarm response from the public, 202 buses were cancelled and 598 buses were operated on September 2 and 56 more buses were cancelled today.
Drivers and conductors of government buses say, "The public are scared of the spread of COVID-19 and avoid using public transport. Further, even the people who travel in the bus seem a little tense and are concerned if any one else might occupy the seat next to them. Hand sanitizers have been placed in buses and only those with face masks are permitted to board. Buses are also cleaned after each trip. Hence, the public need not fear bus travel."

Transport Department authorities said that the crowd of people is not even equal to the number of buses that are parked in the Gandhipuram bus stand, Central bus stand and other bus stands.
Rajkumar, a private employee, whotravelled on the government bus said, "When the bus services resumed the first time after the lockdown relaxations were announced, there was a substantial crowd. However, the buses being operated now have very few passengers. More than 16,000 people are infected with COVID-19 in Coimbatore district. Due to thefear of contracting the disease, the public are hesitant to use public transport. Only those without two wheelers opt to travel by buses."
In the Coimbatore Division,221 buses are operated in Coimbatore, 115 in Tirupur, 86 in Nilgiris and 120 buses in Erode. A total of 542 buses were operated today. Per the transport department officials, the number of buses in operation will increase in proportion to the passenger demand and turnout.
