Kerala authorities releasing water surreptitiously to keep the water level of the Siruvani Dam low? TN authorities keep a vigilant watch

Coimbatore: TWAD officials and the Coimbatore Corporation authorities are keeping a vigilant watch to understand if the water level in the Siruvani dam is being maintained low by the Kerala authorities by releasing water surreptitiously.

Coimbatore: TWAD officials and the Coimbatore Corporation authorities are keeping a vigilant watch to understand if the water level in the Siruvani dam is being maintained low by the Kerala authorities by releasing water surreptitiously.

The Survani dam is situated in Palakkad in Kerala district. The dam is the primary source of water supply for the people of Coimbatore and provides water to the 36 wards within the corporation and 100's of villages on its way.

The Siruvani dam can hold 22.47 square kilometers of water. The dam is 49.53 feet high and is situated 878.5 meters above sea level. It has a total capacity of 650 million cft.

Eversince the monsoon rains began in Kerala a few weeks ago and with the continuous rains in the catchment areas of the dam, the water level in the dam has risen considerably. However, the incessant rains in Kerala have raised the danger of the dam filling up and complaints have been raised stating that considering the safety of the dam and the flood danger, Kerala authorities have not been letting the dam fill up to its full capacity.

It has been alleged that water is being released through the shutters that is used to let water out for quenching the thirst of animals.

TWAD and Coimbatore Corporation officials are therefore vigilantly watching to understand whether the Kerala authorities have been taking measures to prevent the water level in the dam from rising.

Speaking about this TWAD and Corporation officials said, "95 MLT water is being taken on behalf of the Corporation for providing drinking water to the people. Rains in the catchment areas near the dam might cause the dam to fill up to full capacity. However, there is also the suspicion that the Kerala government is not letting the dam fill up to its full capacity. Hence the authorities are continuing to monitor this."
