Coimbatore: The Coimbatore-Tirupur border in Karanampettai has been witnessing heavy passenger movement in the morning hours as more people tend to travel from Tirupur to Coimbatore and vice versa for work, on a daily basis.

People travelling between the two districts used to take trains and buses in order to travel between the districts. However, public transport was stopped in order to to control the spread of COVID-19. With the latest lockdown relaxations, the government announced that inter-district public transport will resume from September 7.

Buses are currently being operated only within the district. As a result of this people going to or arriving from Tirupur have to get down at Karanampettai and board another bus towards their destination. Since very few buses are being operated currently, people are forced to sit close to each other with no social distancing.

Passengers have lamented that it is difficult to change two or three buses each day and requested that more number of buses should be operated in the morning hours.

Passengers are being permitted to board only if they wear face masks and after they sanitize their hands.

Within the city, most of the bus routes are plying with minimum passengers and the decision to operate 50% buses was relooked and now 30% of buses are in operation. Only 260 buses are being operated all over Coimbatore district.

The transport corporation has decided to stop the operations of 21 buses. In some routes there are more passengers only in the morning hours.
