Coimbatore: Increase in foul odour and housefly menace during rains - Residents near Vellalore dump yard complain
Coimbatore: People residing near Vellalore garbage dump yard complain of increase in foul odour and the number of houseflies during the rainy season.
The Vellalore garbage dumpyard receives 800 to 900 tonnes of garbage from 100 wards in the Coimbatore Corporation. Since the garbage is not segregated into degradable and non-degradable wastes, the formation of methane gas has led to many fires in the garbage dump.
In order to prevent this and to reduce the amount of waste that is being brought to Vellalur, the areas including Kavundampalayam, Ondipudur, and Ukkadam have 69 micro-composting centers that will recycle garbage. Further, plans to eliminate the wastes at the dumpyard using biomining are also on the cards. Since the initiation of these projects are delayed, the dump has been stagnating at Vellalore.
Meanwhile monsoon rains have intensified in the Coimbatore district and wastes that soak in the rains tend to emit a foul odour that affects the residents in Podanur, Anbu Nagar, Chettipalayam Bypass road and other nearby areas. Further houseflies multiply and trouble the people in the area.
