Coimbatore: Authorities have informed that only 12 lakh free face masks that were to be provided by the State government have reached the ration shops in Coimbatore.
Coimbatore: Authorities have informed that only 12 lakh free face masks that were to be provided by the State government have reached the ration shops in Coimbatore.
There are nearly 10 lakh ration cards in the Coimbatore district. A total of 62 lakh face masks will be needed to provide free face masks to the people who hold the ration cards. However, only 12 lakh face masks have reached Coimbatore so far.Out of this, 5.85 lakh face masks have been returned back by the officials as they do not satisfy the quality required for face masks.
As a result of this, the distribution of face masks to the public, through the ration shops is being delayed. Speaking about this, an official said, "In the first phase face masks are being planned to be provided to the people in the Coimbatore Corporation, Town Panchayats and Panchayats.To satify this need we need 43 lakh face masks. However only 12 lakh face masks have been received in Coimbatore. The quality of the masks are being checked by the Handloom department. After inspection 5 lakh 85 thousand masks were rejected due to the lack of quality and have been sent back. Distribution of face masks can commence only if 15 lakh face masks are available. Distribution of face masks cannot begin with a meager amount of face masks."
