Tirupur: Tirupur: The public in Tirupur protested the attempts to hand over a temple land to the police department.

An ancient Mariamman temple in the Andipalayam area, Tirupur has 11.16 acres of land. Each year the Chittirai festival is celebrated with pomp and splendour for a week. People from five villages unite and more than 10,000 people take part in the festivities.

Every year, the 11.16 acre land near the temple is used to set shandy for the entertainment of children and temporary shops for public who come to take part in the temple festivities. The Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments department, however, did not consult with the public and decided to hand over this land to the police department.

Condemning this decision, the public staged road roko for more than two hours on Mangalam Road in the Periyandipalayam Pirivu area. They held placards stating, 'temple lands belong to the temple' and 'TN government shouldn't give away the temple land to another department.'

The protestors are sitting on the road causing a traffic snarl.

Police who arrived at the site of protest are conducting talks with more than 300 villagers who are involved in the protest.
