J. Shravan Kumar, who was the Corporation Commissioner earlier, has been transferred to Chennai after being promoted as the Deputy Secretary of Agriculture.Following this, Kumaravel Pandian was sworn in as the 25th Commissioner of Coimbatore today.
He is an alumnus of PSG College of Arts and Sciences, Coimbatore. He did his B.Sc in Physics at the College from 1990 to 1993. He hails from Kallimandayam, near Ottanchatram.
He later spoke with the reporters and said said that serious measures with minor adjustments like how it was taken in Chennai will be taken in Coimbatore to control COVID. He said, "The public should not leave their homes unnecessarily.If you have to leave the house, you must wear a face mask.It is best to wash your hands once an hour. When you go out, ensure there's space of 6 feet between you and the next person."
He added, "the e-pass system to go between districts has been canceled.Therefore, all businesses, big or small companies must strictly adhere to the guidelines issued by the government.Shops should not function with AC's one. Overcrowding should not be allowed inside stores or malls.Violators will be prosecuted.
He said, "It has been decided to appoint additional lab technicians on behalf of the Corporation to expedite the COVID tests. Necessary staff will be recruited and the work of going house to house and head counting those affected by cold and flu will be intensified.We have advised that one person should go to 100 houses a day and conduct the survey."
He added, "Coimbatore has 5 zones, but there are 15 zones in Chennai.The population density there is also high.However due to the drastic action taken, corona was brought under control there.We conduct 20 COVID screening camps per zone per day in one zone.We will try to revamp this system within the next 4 days." Thus he said.
