Coimbatore: The Coimbatore Government Transport Corporation has planned to operate 1019 buses after the government permits the operation of public transport following the relaxation in lockdown is announced in September.
Due to the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic the government had announced a lockdown from March 25, and all private and public bus transport were halted in this lockdown. Following this, relaxations were announced in the lockdown and public transport in the intra zonal areas was permitted from June.
As many as 50% of government buses in the Coimbatore division serving Coimbatore, Tirupur, Nilgiris and Erode Zones operated buses in June. However, this was halted again in July in a bid to control the spread of the virus. The TN government announced that public transport would be halted until further notice. Now it has been announced that buses will ply normally between districts from September 1st 2020.

Informing this, an official of the Coimbatore Government Transport Corporation said this before the announcement for relaxation of norms from September, "The maintenance work on all the government buses in the Coimbatore division workshops are being carried out intensively. Most of the buses have undergone maintenance and are ready to operate. If the government grants permission to operate the buses, then, plans have been made to operate 1019 buses. Depending on the public usage of buses, more buses would be operated."
