Rural Development Department plans to plant palm trees to strengthen bunds and generate income.

The Rural Development department has planned to strengthen the lake bunds and to plant palm trees to increase revenue.

Coimbatore: In order to encourage the cultivation of palm trees in the villages of Coimbatore District, the Rural Development department has associated with the farmers of the area and has made plans to plant palm seeds in the rural areas.

There are 228 panchayats with more than 1,000 villages in the Coimbatore District. There are more than 2,000 ponds and small water bodies under the Rural development department, in these villages. In a bid to make these yield more revenue and to strengthen the lake bunds plans have been made by the authorities to cultivate palm trees in these regions.

Speaking about this, a Rural Development Officer said, "Plans have been made to plant 200 to 500 seeds near each pond. All over the district upto 50,000 palm seeds will be planted on the lake bunds and in public places. To achieve this, seeds are being collected from all the unions and panchayats. These seeds will be planted once the NorthEast monsoons begin", he stated.
