Vellalore Lake turns colourful!
Coimbatore: Volunteers from the Kovai Kulangal Pathukappu Amaippu have replenished the Vellalore Lake in the last few years. They have turned it into a biodiverse water body. They rehabilitated the 99-acre Lake and erected mounds and turned it into a fertile pond.
The land on the edge of the lake is lined with shrubs that were planted in the Miyawaki style. In 2017, plants were planted that could be useful for butterflies. Manikandan of the Kovai Kulangal Pathukappu Amaippu said the number of butterflies is increasing in July-August as it is their migrating period.

The birds migrate from the Eastern Ghats and cross various districts to reach the Western Ghats. As the biodiversity around the lake improves, the number of butterflies that migrated to the lake increased in the early 2020s.
A park has been set-up with selected plants like Indian birthwort, Indian curry leaves, lemon trees, Cassia abroresensis, Ixora coccinea, Indian mallow, heliotropium Indicum, Arabian Jasmine, Manila tamarind and stachytarpheta jamaicensis to increase the number of butterflies.

More than 30 butterfly species including the dark blue tiger, the common crow, the blue tiger, the crimson rose, the lime butterfly, and the striped tiger have made this pond their habitat.
