Coimbatore: Corporation Commissioner J. Shravan Kumar has requested private company employees to voluntarily take tests for COVID-19 at the medical camps conducted by the corporation.
It was earlier informed by the Corporation that private business owners should get their employees tested for COVID-19 every 10 days at their own expenses. This led to a strong opposition from businessmen and various political parties. Corporation Commissioner said free medical camps are conducted daily at more than 100 locations on behalf of the Corporation of Coimbatore. He said the purpose of these camps is to diagnose people for coronavirus infection who have symptoms.
As there were coronavirus infections reported for employees of private shops, offices and other areas under the corporation, Corporation Commissioner said to prevent this, medical camps are conducted in the area on behalf of the corporation. He alleged that many shop owners and employees do not attend as they fear that their stores would be closed and isolated if a coronavirus infection was confirmed.
Following this, businessmen were advised to test employees for COVID-19 at least once every 10 days for employees working in private stores to control the spread of coronavirus. Corporation Commissioner said, "My intention is not to make owners spend but to make them volunteer for coronavirus testing at nearby medical camps'.
He added that ‘pool’ testing in private laboratories costs only up to Rs.1000 and hence store owners must cooperate to test their employees. He warned that strict action will be taken when records for testing are not produced during inspections.
