Coimbatore: The end of the monsoon rains has delayed the Aliyar dam from reaching its full capacity of 120 feet.
With the water level in the dam reaching 110 feet, the rains in the dam area and Valparai have ended, delaying the dam from reaching its full capacity of 120 feet.
The Aliyar dam near Pollachi is 120 feet high and has a total capacity of 3.25 tmc. Nearly 50,000 acres of agricultural land are irrigated through the water from this dam that flows through Old Aayakattu, New Aayakattu and the Vettaikaranpudur canals.

Further, Pollachi, Anamalai, Kinathukadavu, Kurichi, Kuniyamuthur, and the surrounding areas are provided with drinking water through this dam.
For the past eight months, the water level in the Aliyar dam was below 60 feet. Southwest monsoon rains that poured in the month of July increased the water level rapidly and on August 11, it reached 100 feet. Due to the incessant rains it was expected that the Aliyar dam would reach its full capacity. However, now that the rains have stopped, the water inflow to the dam has reduced drastically.

As per yesterday’s data, 411 cft of water has been released from the dam and the water level in the dam remained at 110.15 feet.
Each year, when the Aliyar dam reaches full capacity, the excess water gets wastefully released into the rivers. Due to this, during the drought season, farmers struggle with the dwindling levels of underground water.
Hence the farmers have requested the authorities to make plans to fill up the ponds and water bodies in the surrounding areas of Pollachi with excess water released from the Aliyar dam this year.
