Coimbatore: 13,558 join 100-day employment program in Coimbatore district as result of the loss of employment and difficulties caused due to lockdown.
The National Rural Employment Scheme provides one hundred days of employment per family in rural areas. The scheme is provided and implemented under the Central Government. The work is in progress in the 379 areas listed in Coimbatore district.
The 100-day employment program was suspended from March to May due to the lockdown. The program again resumed from June as few lockdown restrictions were relaxed. Officials said the number of people signing up for work has increased post the lockdown. A District Administration officer said, an average of 20 to 25 thousand people enroll and work for one hundred days and 1.18 lakh people have used the scheme this year.
13,558 new joinees have so far received the 100 day employment card. Due to the coronavirus lockdown, people in rural areas are using local employment opportunities as daily wage earners are not able to get full employment. In rural areas, all those who apply for a hundred employment are offered a job. The officer said, the card is issued at the respective panchayat offices.
