Coimbatore: The lack of public transport and the need to travel to work have led to the boom in the sales of used two wheelers in Coimbatore.
Automobile traders have stated that there has been a massive increase in the sale of both new and used two wheelers in Coimbatore during the lockdown period. The lockdown that came into place on March 24 led to the halting of train, bus and other public transport services. Following this, relaxations to the lockdown led to the reopening of industries and offices. Public transport was also permitted to operate for a few days before it was stopped again, completely.

As a result of this, officegoers, people working at industries, farm labourers and daily wage labourers and all other sections of workers were affected.

Most of the people who were dependent on public transport for inter-district and intra-district movement were left in the lurch, but this has led to a boom in the sales of old and new two wheelers in Coimbatore.
The owner of a shop selling second-hand two wheelers in the Ramnagar area, Jonas said, “The lockdown and the closure of shops led to business being affected greatly. After relaxations were announced shops were permitted to reopen. Initially, the sale was dull, however, it has picked up pace in the past few days.”
He added, “The sale of used two wheelers in the range of Rs.30,000 has particularly picked up. Most people prefer the scooter model two wheelers. Some people buy these vehicles to learn riding while most of the people buy them as there is a lack of public transport. These people have shown interest to buy the used two wheelers to transport themselves to their workplaces.”
“There are more than 120 shops that sell used two wheelers in Coimbatore. Each of the shop has been selling one to three vehicles each day. Loans of up to Rs.20,000, to buy vehicles are provided easily. Hence, it is easy for people to buy these used two wheelers”, he noted.
“People have shown equal interest in buying new two wheelers as well”, said a two wheeler salesman at a private company, who added, “The sale of two wheelers has increased since last June. Arrangements have been made to make the availability of loans easy for new two wheelers. Many people have also opted for exchange offers, where they can give away their old two wheelers for new ones.”

"The loss of sale due to the lockdown has picked up now. Usually the purchase of two wheelers increases in August mainly due to the beginning of the college year. Due to the lockdown, colleges have not reopened. However, the purchase of two wheelers by middle aged office goers has led to the increase in the sale. In Coimbatore District alone, more than 250 two wheelers are being sold each day”, he informed.
