Coimbatore: Coimbatore GH doctors have saved the life of a one-and-a-half-year-old boy who got a peanut stuck in his trachea.

Kanagaraj hails from Alangad near Karuvampalayam in Tirupur district. On the 18th of this month, the one-and-a-half-year-old Kanagaraj suffered from asphyxiation as a groundnut got stuck in his trachea. The child was immediately taken to a nearby private hospital.

The child was later admitted to Tirupur Government Hospital for treatment and then shifted to Coimbatore Government Hospital where the X-ray and CT scan of the baby revealed that there was obstruction in the trachea.

Immediately, a team of doctors led by Ali Sultan administered anaesthesia and removed the peanuts from the trachea with an injection like device. The doctor said if the block had not been removed the baby's life would have been in danger.

He added that as babies have a windpipe circumference of only 5 mm, care should be taken that they do not put small objects in their mouths and in case they swallow anything and suffocate, they should be taken to hospital immediately.
