Coimbatore: The water discharged from the Aliyar Dam near Pollachi flows into Kerala via the Aliyar River to villages including Kottur, Anaimalai, Ambarambalayam, Aathu Pollachi and Gopalapuram.

In areas including Aliyar and Kottur Anaimalai, the sewage effluents are directly mixed into the river, and in the Aliyar that flows through Anaimalai. Here the water hyacinths are spread across the river.

This is one of the main water resources in Pollachi and the surrounding area.

The contamination of the water and spread of water hyacinths has increased the risk of water pollution. The public has urged concerned municipal authorities to stop the flow of sewage in the river and remove the water hyacinths to protect the drinking water resources.
