Coimbatore: The construction of halls for panchayat level meetings, equivalent to private wedding halls is being undertaken at a cost of Rs.70.75 lakhs per hall. Out of the 228 panchayats in Coimbatore District, 55 panchayats began construction in January.

All these buildings will have facilities equivalent to that of private wedding halls. The project that was begun with the intent of increasing wealth for panchayats selected 1,000 panchayats and allotted Rs.70.75 lakhs each for the construction of the building.

55 panchayats have been selected in the Coimbatore District. Each building will consist of two storeys. Reception hall, occasion hall, stage, two separate rooms and toilets will be available on the ground floor while the kitchen and the dining hall will be located on the first floor.

The ground floor will be 3,200 sq.ft while the first floor will be 1,800 sq.ft.

Speaking about this a District Administrative Officer said, "The buildings are constructed under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee scheme, for meetings, with the intent of increasing the properties that could bring in revenue to the panchayats."

He added, "When these buildings come into use they will be rented out for low costs to the various government departments, public, events of private organisations and meetings. These buildings will help the economically backward people to conduct their family events in these halls. These buildings are constructed with the intent of being on par with the private wedding halls, with all facilities."

"The revenue from these buildings will be added to the Panchayat common fund. 50% of the construction work has been completed in 10 buildings and 40% work has been completed in the remaining buildings. Some of the panchayats have identified the land for the building and the construction of the foundation has been completed. Due to the lockdown, the work was interrupted. Now the construction work has gained pace", he noted.
