Coimbatore: Tamil Nadu keeps inching towards the 6,000 new cases a day even as COVID-related deaths shot up in the State well above 110, the State Media Bulletin confirmed. As many as 5,958 people tested positive for the infection today, taking the total tally to 3,97,261 in the state.

The number of deaths today was 118. The State’s COVID toll stands at a whopping 6,839, according to the Health Bulletin.
State Capital Chennai registered 1,287 fresh cases.
At 484 cases, Coimbatore registered its highest ever single-day spike of new cases. The district continues to maintain an upward trend so far as single-day jumps go. The Coimbatore district administration is gearing up for an acid test test following the Health Department’s ominous prediction that the daily number of cases would rise alarmingly in the next 15 days. Deputy Director of Health Services G Ramesh Kumar said recently that the fresh cases would breach the 500 mark in the days to come, with tallies as high as 500 to 700 a day.
He said, "The numbers have already spiked. We have a daily case count of 350 to 400. However, one must remember that the spike is also linked to a rise in sample size in the city corporation limits."
It is to be noted that Coimbatore recorded second highest fresh COVID cases after Chennai, today.
While Tirupur logged 97 cases, The Nilgiris logged just 4 cases.
On the brighter side, the number of recoveries stood at 5,606, taking the total count of recoveries to 3,38,060 in the State.
