Coimbatore: All parties have decided to hold a protest in Pollachi, demanding an alternative dwelling for tribals and their right to livelihood in front of the Forest Department office on September 3.
Coimbatore: All parties have decided to hold a protest in Pollachi, demanding an alternative dwelling for tribals and their right to livelihood in front of the Forest Department office on September 3.
A consultative meeting was held in Pollachi on behalf of various political parties including DMK, MDMK and the Communist Party. The meeting was attended by executives from various parties and organizations.
In the meeting they discussed the lack of alternative accommodation for the tribals living in Pollachi and Valparai and the deprivation of their livelihood rights and regarding the landslide in a tribal hamlet near Valparai last year. The flood had washed away the houses and livestock of the tribals living there.
They also discussed the issues where the tea plantation administration and the forest department are trying to evict them from where they are currently staying. It was also decided to insist on providing them dwelling in the Theppakulamedu area, the traditional residence of the tribal villagers.
The tribals in Sarkarpathy and Nagaroothu who were affected by the floods last year, were made to stay in a temporary alternative place and it was promised that permanent houses will be built for them soon. However, nothing has been done. It has hence been decided to hold a demonstration on September 3, insisting on the demands that include the need to provide an alternative location for the tribals and to provide basic amenities to the tribals living in forests.
