Coimbatore: In another elephant rampage incident, a herd of elephants damaged the walls, pavements and doors of Maraiamman temple near Pannimedu estate in Valparai town, on Monday.
Over 500 tea estate workers stay at the residential quarters of Pannimedu estate in Valparai. While elephant straying into estate premises is a common phenomenon at Valparai, the Pannimedu tea estate workers are stuck in panic, after a herd of five elephants have been visiting them quite often.
On Monday, the estate workers had to bang tins and drums to chase the herd that had camped in their residential quarters. After an hour, they chased the herd from their estate.

However, the elephants, on the way back into the forest, broke the door, windows and walls of the Mariamman temple in the locality. The Forest department officials who arrived there on receiving information are monitoring the movement of the elephants which have camped, there for the past few days.

The tea estate workers have expressed fear of the herd returning back during night hours into their residential quarters.
