Coimbatore: In a press release issued in the interest of the public, Coimbatore police have detailed a few scams that are currently in vogue and have requested the public to stay aware and be cautious of the scammers.

One recent scam involves fraudulent persons calling up the public through cell phones and introducing themselves as employees of an organisation and they go on to state that they viewed the person's house on satellite and Google maps and identified it as the perfect spot for setting up a cellphone tower.

If the person agrees to get into a contract, they promise a cellphone tower would be set up in the land/house of the person. Further, the land owner would be promised a handsome compensation for this and their bank account informationand ATM card number would be taken by the scammer.

In another scam, persons identifying themselves as army men post advertisements on apps such as OLX stating that they were selling their two or four wheelers as they were being transferred to a North Indian state. Attracting the customer by offering a low price, they also speak in aconvincing manner and request the customer to send them a token amount through Google Pay. They also state that the remaining money can be paid when they take ownership of the vehicle.

Another advertisement on OLX advertises that persons work at the airport in the Customs department and that they have a lot of foreign cell phones that can be bought for a cheap price. When the people who fall for this advertisement call the scammer, they are asked to make an online payment and they are also told that the cell phone would be sent to them through courier. The scammer convinces the public to part with their money.

In yet another scam, people pretending to be calling from banks ask for bank account number, ATM card no., the secret code of the customer to help them and end up transferring all of the money from the account.

The Police department has issued this information in public interest and have requested the public to stay aware of the various scams and the scammers.
