Tamil Nadu Handloom Weaver Welfare Association petitions government for COVID-19 relief
Coimbatore: Tamil Nadu Handloom Weaver Welfare Association petitioned government for COVID-19 relief as they allege that weavers been pushed to the point of suicide due to poverty.
Subramanian and his family from Namakkal committed suicide by consuming poison due to poverty caused with no work in which both the husband and wife died. Similarly, a young weaver named Poovesh has committed suicide in Thiruvannamalai district. They said COVID-19 and these current incidents in the last four days has made a huge impact among the weavers. Also a condolence meeting was held at Vachinampalayam on behalf of the Tamil Nadu Handloom Weavers' Welfare Movement to pay homage to the weavers who died due to poverty.
President of the Movement Devaraj headed the meeting and the handloom weavers from Sirumugai paid their respects to the victims who committed suicide by showering flowers. All the weavers discussed about their concerns and said several weaving families have been pushed to the limits of suicide as the government has not taken adequate steps to safeguard the livelihood of weavers during the COVID-19 period.
They said even when the weaver committed suicide, the Tamil Nadu government did not condole the incident. In the meeting, the weavers urged the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu to provide adequate financial assistance and provide free quality education to the children of the families of the weavers who lost their lives due to poverty caused by COVID.
Later, Devaraj told reporters that they have put forward a seven-point demand to protect the 2 crore weavers across Tamil Nadu, nbt he said that the government had not yet responded and the suicides are likely to continue if the situation remains the same. He urged the government to take appropriate action to protect the weavers. He said that in the neighboring state of Telangana, 24 thousand rupees a year is being provided to weavers. He urged the Tamil Nadu government to conduct a survey of weavers and provide adequate relief to protect them
