More than 10,000 handlooms function in Sirumugai and surroundings near Mettupalayam. Handwoven sarees from Sirumugai are sent for sale all over India. Two months ago due to the impact of COVID-19 pandemic, the sarees woven at Sirumugai were sold at the production price and many people took advantage of the situation and purchased the sarees at the production price.

While the weavers were left jobless during the pandemic, this announcement by the manufacturers gave a new lease of life and helped the weavers regain their jobs. Two months after this, the manufacturers are currently keen on the production of a new kind of soft silk saree that can be used for special occasions.

The launch of the new kind of soft silk sarees with new designs from Sirumugai was held today at a private marriage hall by the Sirumugai All Handloom Silk Saree Manufacturers and Vendors Association.

The event saw the launch of the new kind of soft silk saree with new designs and colours for weddings and other occasions.

"Light weight silk sarees that are more convenient to use than the traditional heavy silk sarees have been introduced. While weavers are suffering due to lack of work due to the pandemic, the public can provide their patronage to handloom sarees and help uplift the lives of weavers", requested the silk manufacturers.
