Coimbatore: The farmers near Pollachi havepetitioned to the Sub-Collector to take action against the coir factory discharging waste into agricultural lands. A private coir factory is operating in the Thommankuthu area near Pollachi.

Farmers in the area have lodged a complaint with the Pollachi Sub-Collector stating that the coconut waste and sewage discharged from the factory is let into nearby agricultural lands which is causing adverse effects.

Farmers in the area said, the private coir factories operating in the Thommankuthu area are discharging waste into nearby agricultural lands. They said the water that falls on the coir pit makes the land polluted and the discharge seeps into the ground polluting the groundwater as well. Hence it mixes with the water in the agricultural wells and borewells on both sides of the river.

Now, work is underway to start another factory in the area. The farmers demanded that the authorities should inspect such coir factories that are polluting agricultural lands and take proper action against them.
