The Nilgiris: Carrot washing machine owners will go on strike from 6 pm today against officers sealing carrot washing stations functioning water purification plants This will affect the hill vegetables like carrot and beetroot hitting the market.

Farmers in the Nilgiris district apart from tea, are indulged in cultivating vegetables, including carrots and beetroot. The carrots and beetroot that are harvested everyday are taken to 60 carrot and beetroot washing stations in the district. There they are cleaned and sent to other districts and states for sale.

Upto 500 tonnes of vegetables are being sold per day. A complaint was raised that the water used to wash the carrots was being discharged without proper purification. Hence the district administration instructed to set up cleaning machines at the carrot washing stations in the district. But the lockdown and heavy rains made it impossible to set up a cleaning station. On the other hand the officials have begun to seal washing stations that have not set up water purification areas.

Hence an indefinite strike has been announced today by the owners of the washing station demanding more time to set up the purification plant and to forgo action of sealing companies. This strike will directly affect the sale of 500 tonne carrot and beetroots to the market. Also over 50,000 people directly and indirectly employed in the industry are likely to lose their job.
