Coimbatore: To prevent human- wildlife conflict, the forest department has formed a Whatsapp group including forest workers, farmers, wildlife enthusiasts and doctors in all the seven forest ranges under the Coimbatore Forest Division. A toll free number has also been created.

There are seven forest ranges under the Coimbatore Forest Division that includes Madukkarai, Coimbatore, Periyanaickenpalayam, Mettupalayam, Sirumugai, Boluvampatti and Karamadai. Villages near these forest ranges are frequently visited by wild elephants leading to human- wildlife conflict. In an attempt to put an end to this, the Forest department began to monitor the movement of elephants with the help of drones and released a video recently.
A Whatsapp group has now been formed for each forest range. This group consists of the Forest workers of the area, farmers, wildlife enthusiasts and doctors. This group would help with the monitoring of elephants and provide information regarding the movement of elephants and that of ailing elephants. Forest rangers can be contacted on time through this group and the public can be warned in advance when any wild elephant steps out of the forest area. The forest department has been sending notices on a daily basis regarding the movement of elephants.
Further, the Forest department has also released a toll free number to register the areas with higher elephant movement. Similarly, a Community Information Network Whatsapp group has been created with all the seven forest rangers. The 24 x 7 toll free number for Rapid Rescue team of the Coimbatore Forest Division is 1800-42545456
