Coimbatore: Coimbatore continued to languish in the national index of clean cities. The central government releases the Swach Survekshan rankings every year after a survey of all major cities in India.

In this ranking, Coimbatore continued to rank low in the national index but ranked above Madurai and Chennai in the clean city index of 2020. However, it has shown no noticeable improvement from its 40th position, the same rank that it held in 2019.

The Swachh Survekshan scheme was inaugurated by the Prime Minister Modi in 2016 to identify the cities that excel in sanitation and appreciate them.

In continuation of this the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs released the list of clean cities yesterday. For the fourth consecutive year, Indore, Madhya Pradesh has grabbed the first place in the list. The city is also listed as one of the cities with a population of more than 10 lakhs.

Among South Indian cities Mysore has bagged the first place and cities like Vijayawada, Tirupathi, Visakhapatnam, Hyderabad, Rajahmundry, Tumkur, Ongole and Kakinada also hold a place in the list. In TN cities like Coimbatore find a place in the list. Remarkably, seven cities of Andhra make it to the list of clean cities.

In TN, Coimbatore was declared the cleanest city with the 40th rank followed by Madurai and Chennai. While Coimbatore held the 16th place in 2018 it came down to the 40th place in 2019 and has remained in the same spot this year too.

The ranking is based on the solid waste management schemes undertaken by Urban Local Bodies, the field ranking of the Central government representatives and the people's opinion.

The fact that Coimbatore has been ranked in the same spot concludes that there has been no measurable improvements in the sanitation of the city in the past year.

Public from various walks of life will attest that Coimbatore’s cleanliness has been the poorest in the last few years and with many activities going on at the same time it’s not likely to improve anytime soon. Public opined that at least Coimbatore should start working towards cleanliness in small meaningful ways instead of piling on projects.
