SPB remains critical, on ECMO, hospital

CHENNAI: For the fifth consecutive day, playback singer S P Balasubrahmanyam, continues to be critical at the MGM Healthcare in Chennai, where he is under treatment for Covid-19 complications.

A medical bulletin from the hospital said on Wednesday evening that an expert medical team treating him is closely monitoring his vital parameters, which are satisfactory at this point of time. It said that SPB has been connected to life support systems, including a ventilator and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO).

Similar to a heart-lung bypass machine, ECMO is used to pump and oxygenate the patient's blood outside the body, replacing the function of the lungs and heart.
