Coimbatore: Coimbatore: Anaikatti is a place where one can often see elephant herds moving around. These herds roam in the roads near Anaikatti and also the nearby villages. The forest department personnel always keep a close watch on these jumbos.
It is customary for forest department personnel to patrol the Anaikatti Extension Reserve about 15 km from Mangarai in the Coimbatore Wildlife Sanctuary. While patrolling the area yesterday, they found a dead elephant calf, in a decayed state.
The Additional Chief Chief Forest Officer and the District Forest Officer were immediately informed. Under their direction, veterinarians Dr. Sukumar and Dr. Manogaran rushed to the spot.
According to reports, the baby elephant may have been born dead or died of some illness, 2-3 days back. As pack of wild dogs and boars have preyed on the carcass, its difficult to ascertain the exact reason for the death of the calf. However, an investigation is underway, the officials told.
