Nearly four lakh acres of agricultural lands in Coimbatore and Tirupur are irrigated with the water from the Thirumoorthy dam which is released through the PAP irrigation scheme. Due to the heavy monsoon rains this year, water levels at all the PAP dams have increased. Following this water from the Parambikulam dam was released via the Kandur Canal to the Thirumoorthy dam. The dam with a capacity of 60 feet is now filled up to 39.41 feet.

Under the circumstances, a meeting was held on August 19 at the PAP project office in Pollachi. This meeting was chaired by the Supervising Engineer Muthusamy. Many PWD officials and farmers participated in the meeting.

The farmers insisted that the government must be recommended to release 8,700 million cft of water from the Thirumoorthy dam, from August 28 for 135 days, at regular intervals for irrigation of the second zone under the PAP Project.

They also stated that this will help with the irrigation of 95,000 acres of coconut, groundnut, corn, shallots and climber vegetables and requested for a proposal to be presented to the government regarding this.

The officials agreed to the request of the farmers and have decided to send their recommendations to the government.
